Newcomb and Kyung-sun Baek, are passionate about living life
though the body, mind, emotions and spirit in equal measure.
Both coming from an extensive background in both dance and personal
development, they endeavor to bring movement into literally
every aspect of people's lives. Dylan trained at the Juilliard
School in music and dance and danced for eight years with the
world-renowned Netherlands Dance Theater before founding The
Danslab Institute for Movement Research. Kyung-sun trained at
the Korean National University of the Arts in both traditional
Korean and modern dance and went on to get her masters in Post-modern
dance at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and
danced with many leading dance-makers and improvisors there.
Recently married, they have been gradually deepening their relationship
together for the past ten years, applying what they learned
as dancers to their own relationship. Together, they have been
researching, developing and practicing their own form of conscious
movement based on sound, breath, movement and thought called
UZAZU. Reaching deep into body mind and spirit at the same time,
UZAZU has become a powerful vehicle for them to explore and
enjoy the ever-changing dynamics of relationship and service,
both to each other and to a growing number of people around
the world.

UZAZU brings us flow by tapping into the timeless principles of yin and yang, and grounding them in a thoroughly modern and immediately accessible approach to the movement arts, psychology, and bio-energetics. In this unique 1.5 hour workshop, Dylan and Kyung-sun will be focusing exclusively on the core dynamics of pure Yin and pure Yang. The central duality in any person's life is the constant tension between 'Self' and 'Other'. These two energetic poles can be seen as the quintessential Yin and Yang of consciousness. Yang energy is the center and moves outward from 'Self'; Yin energy surrounds us and moves inward from 'Other'. Our ability to be fully present with the energy of 'Self' and the energy of 'Other,' is our ability to fully answer the call of our consciousness. In our day-to-day lives, however, these polarities often block each other and result in a compromise—where partial 'Self' meets partial 'Other'.
To be fully present with something is to devote one's complete awareness to it. In this light, Yang Devotion entails a complete 'showing up for' and honouring of 'Self'; it is 'Agency'— the foundation of our ability to act. Yin Devotion entails being fully available in body-mind-spirit for the 'Other'; this is 'Communion'—the foundation for all relationship. It is 'Self' and 'Other', 'Agency' and 'Communion,' that form the sacred union of Yin and Yang.
In this workshop we will be exploring questions such as: 'What does the full presence of 'Self' and 'Other' look and feel like? How can we shift the polarity of 'Self' and 'Other' from being in a state of conflict to a state of synergy. We will engage in a series of simple, full-body exercises, games, and chanting to unleash the abundance that naturally flows from a deeply embodied devotion to both 'Self' and 'Other'.
